MESSAGE FROM
THE CHAIRMAN OF MEDICINE
Welcome to
the Jacobi/Einstein Department of Internal Medicine. We are
very proud of our hospital and distinguished Residency Program
in Internal Medicine, which is sponsored directly by Albert
Einstein College of Medicine. We hope this website provides you
with a flavor for the dynamic, exciting opportunities that you
can share with us in our Residency Program.
Jacobi
Medical Center is a unique institution. Formerly known as the
Bronx Municipal Hospital Center, Jacobi is one of the premier
public hospitals in the United States. It is a major center for
Trauma, Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and of
course Internal Medicine. Jacobi patients come from around the
world, and from every socioeconomic class.
The
Department of Medicine at Jacobi has an extraordinary tradition
of training leaders in research and the clinical practice of
medicine. Five Medical School Deans and more than twenty
Chairmen of Medicine Departments went through this residency
program.
The tradition
continues. If you come to Jacobi's Medicine Residency Program,
you will have the chance to become a leader in any realm of
Internal Medicine, from basic research to primary care. You
will be able to develop careers that range from the
investigation of basic molecular biology to the delivery of
excellent medical care to patients in urban neighborhood health
centers.
I want to
describe what I consider to be the three most important features
of the Residency in Internal Medicine at Jacobi that set our
program apart from many other programs:
First, Jacobi
is one of a few public hospitals in the country whose residency
programs are sponsored directly by a leading medical school.
Jacobi Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of
Medicine were built together, and are located on the same
campus. All full time faculty in the Department of Medicine are
also faculty of the College of Medicine.
This
relationship guarantees that you will be taught on a daily basis
by highly skilled, academic physicians. You will have access to
the resources of one of the great medical schools and research
institutions in the United States. You will have the chance to
interact, both formally and informally, with some of the leading
research scientists in the country, and to choose, if you wish,
to work in on the research laboratories. And you have the
guarantee that the quality of our program is under the constant
review by the Committee on Graduate Medical Education at
Einstein.
Second,
Jacobi is not just an academic medical center. If you come to
Jacobi, you will have the unmatched opportunity of working on
the wards of a busy, vibrant New York City public hospital. Let
me tell you what this means. You will be exposed to the widest
variety of patients, who come from all over the world, and who
have the widest array of disease processes. Under the
supervision of experienced Attendings, you will become experts
at medical care and decision-making, precisely because of the
autonomy that residents can only have in a public hospital
environment. For many of your patients, you will become the
doctor who will follow them throughout your residency in our
outpatient clinics.
Third, Jacobi
Medical Center is a great working environment. We have one of
the most modern facilities of any hospital in the New York area
and are proud of our most recent additions, including a $200
million new inpatient hospital and a beautiful outpatient
facility, both inter-connected with the main hospital. These
facilities provide extremely pleasant, highly advanced
environment for patients and physicians. Jacobi is also one of
the leading hospitals for information technology in the United
States. We have received awards from many organizations;
including being named by the American Hospital Association
one of the 100 most advanced ("most wired") systems for computer
technology in the United States four years in a row. We are
pioneers in computerized data bases, and have been writing
orders online for 15 years. Now we are using those data bases
for cutting edge epidemiological and medical research. You will
not find a better environment for information and computer
technology anywhere else.
The public
hospital residency experience is unlike any other, and I am even
more firmly convinced than I was the day I finished my own city
hospital residency that this is the place for doctors to train.
Other residency programs may give you a small taste of this
experience. Residents from the Jacobi Program live the
tradition.
In summary,
the Jacobi Internal Medicine Residency Program gives you the
chance to interact with members and leaders of one of America’s
great Medical Schools, to deliver front line care of patients
from the Bronx and all over the world, and to join a
longstanding tradition of training exceptional physicians. I
invite you to apply for our residency program, and look forward
to talking with you more in person.
Sincerely,
Charles Nordin, M.D.
