State of the art computer systems at Jacobi:

At Jacobi you can focus on the clinical presentation and situation of your patient. Access to all the data and old records is simply a matter of a few computer key strokes.

At most hospitals, especially in the New York area, much of the work around a new patient admission involves “tracking down” the old records, flipping through charts and phone calls to outpatient providers/pharmacies. Here at Jacobi, you can get all that you need easily and therefore be able to spend your time and effort focused on “what is wrong with my patient?” and “what shall we do for him/her?” In other words, you get to be a doctor, not a detective.

What is available to you:
All previous
Admission notes: intern, resident and attending
Progress notes: intern and attending
Consult notes
Discharge summaries
Outpatient clinic notes: all specialties
Lists of all Medications prescribed inpatient and outpatient
Images of AND official reports from all radiology studies
Stress test results
Old ECGs

All laboratory studies inpatient and outpatient, and all can be “trended” at the touch of a button. “Did she have iron studies done before?”, “How has his creatinine varied over the past few months?” Most trainees either have to spend lots of time obtaining this information, or all too often, simply repeat the workup. Here at Jacobi you work on “what to do with the information” that is what does it mean clinically, not “where is the information”.

Whether as an intern working to keep close track of your patients or as a supervising resident, this super high tech environment leaves your “to do list” much more clinically relevant. Further, educationally there are many benefits as well. Everyone on the team, from attending to third year student has more time for teaching, reading and making sure we take the best possible care of our patients. This means a more enriching learning environment for you.

So how does our computer system let you efficiently seek out answers in the literature or from your favorite textbook? Very simple. The Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM) library website. To fully appreciate all that is available to you at home, at work or from any internet connected computer you have to play around at the site for a while, but some highlights:

OVID assisted Medline searches: every article every published with searches assisted by OVID. Nearly every citation you find is accessible in  full text to  print and download.

EBM Medicine Reviews: this includes The Cochrane Collaboration and ACP Journal Club, amongst others. This makes searches even more high quality, as other trusted sources have made sure the citations meet methodological standards.

Nearly every imaginable textbook, journal, and Up to Date available full access.

Hundreds of AECOM, Government, and other websites for easy access to myriad data sources, help with statistical analysis, news, updates, access to other libraries, downloads for your PDA and home computers (medical and non medical), maps, encyclopedias, etc and etc

All in all, the theme is clear, that here at Jacobi, we want to make sure you have the clinical data, time and resources you need to do the two mutually necessarily things trainees are here to do: to take excellent care of their patients and to learn how to practice top notch Internal Medicine.
