In keeping with the nationwide emphasis on primary care, the Jacobi residency program in internal medicine devotes one third of the housestaff's training to ambulatory care experiences. Ambulatory training takes place in our brand new, modern, state-of-the-art Ambulatory Pavilion. This takes place in dedicated outpatient rotations, during which on-call and hospital time is kept to a minimum, and in continuity clinics, during which residents care for the same panel of clinic patients on assigned days throughout the year.
Residents in the three-year internal medicine training program have a total of five months devoted exclusively to ambulatory care training. This includes one month during PGY 1 and two months each during PGY 2 and 3. These blocks emphasize clinical experience with patients. As they progress through the program, residents assume graduated responsibility for the management of ambulatory patients. The newly formed one month ambulatory block during PGY1 also contains Quality Improvement training.
